Prototyping Flanders' first teledermatology service

At the end of 2020, Ghent-based dermatologist and skincare expert Annelies Avermaete noticed an interesting pattern all three of her practices: there's a large influx of people booking an appointment at the dermatologist, but 80% of them do not have a serious skin condition. Even more so, for most people, a simple image would suffice for Avermaete (and other dermatologists) to be able to tell their patients what their condition was. Many people were booking an appointment, while they could've saved themselves a trip to the dermatologist. On the other hand, Avermaete was receiving a large volume of Whatsapp images from concerned friends and family, asking her about what could be wrong with her skin. This caused an overload of work, and more importanly; long wait times at dermatologists for people with sincere skin problems.

She figured this would be an interesting challenge to tackle, and joined forces with Bothrs to conceptualize a solution for this problem. We got together in a war room and spent four days coming up with a solution, true Design Sprint-style. In that week, we prioritized the most important assumptions we had about the problem and our potential solution, created sketches and a high-fidelity prototype, validated it with other dermatologists, and built a website with a live proof-of-concept.
